Weekly Writing Prompt Thirty-One: Giving

by Heather on December 18, 2011

This time of year, there is a lot of talk about gifts. Whether it’s for a specific holiday or
perhaps a birthday, it is perfectly normal to make a list of things you’d like to recieve.
But what about giving? Have you thought about what gifts you are going to give someone else?

The beauty of giving is that it doesn’t have to be store-bought.
You can make a gift, do something special for someone else, or even give away something you don’t need anymore.

This week, write about a time you gave something to someone else.

give [giv]
-Verb:  gave, given, giving

  • to present voluntarily and without expecting compensation; bestow: to give a birthday present to someone.
  • to hand to someone: Give me that plate, please.
  • to place in someone’s care: If you give me your coat, I’ll put it in the closet.
  • to grant (permission, opportunity, etc.) to someone: Give me a chance.
  • to impart or communicate: to give advice; to give a cold to someone.

Creative writing tip: When editing a story, read it aloud.

After looking a computer screen or a notebook for a long period of time, mistakes seem to blend away from your eye. Before hitting publish (and linking up with us!) or handing in a story, ask someone to listen to it. You’ll be surprised how quickly you can find those errors!

Writing Goal: 200 words.

Safety tip of the week: If you are using those fun badge-earning apps on your phone, avoid linking them to accounts like Facebook or Twitter.
Parent tip: Scammers are getting craftier when it comes to sending out phishing emails. These emails look convencing but are actually trying to trick you or your child into giving out sensitive information or click a link. Links often times are embedded with code programmed to get into your hardrive.
Gift

A gift doesn't have to be tangible. The act is what actually counts.
